How do we cheaply copyright a song ?

My band wants to start a myspace account, and have some of our songs on it. Some of the band members are worried that some of our songs might get lifted by other bands .Is there a cheap way to make a claim on a song or copright in a way to make it hard to steal , without all of the expense of a lawyer ?

For official protection you must use a lawyer to legally copyright your songs. It is the only legal way you can do it.

THE MAIL-TO-SELF METHOD DOES NOT WORK. If you mail it to yourself it will not hold up as evidence in a court of law. The only legal way to say you wrote a song first is to copyright it through a lawyer.
